The UK government will nationalise Avanti West Coast rail services operating between London and Scotland beginning in March 2027, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed.
The services affected cover key routes along the West Coast Main Line (WCML) corridor, including rail connections from London Euston to Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as northern English destinations and a service to Holyhead in Wales. This move ends years of private operation by FirstGroup and Trenitalia under the Avanti West Coast brand.
Nationalisation follows a history of persistent problems with Avanti West Coast’s service delivery, including chronic delays, cancellations, overcrowding, and other repeated service
failures. These operational issues have driven the government’s decision to take control of the WCML corridor.
Under state ownership, management fees that were previously paid to private shareholders will be redirected into the rail network to fund infrastructure upgrades and initiatives aimed at improving service reliability and passenger experience.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham criticized Avanti West Coast’s performance, stating, “For years, people have been expected to put up with Avanti’s cancellations, delays, overcrowding, and a service that has failed them time and time again.” Transport officials confirmed that public ownership of the West Coast Main Line will begin in March
2027.
This nationalisation is part of a broader UK government strategy to bring Britain’s fragmented passenger rail system under public control to improve infrastructure and customer service across the network.
