Flight delays at Toronto Pearson, Montreal-Trudeau, Calgary, and Vancouver International airports fell by roughly 85% between May and August 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to NAV Canada. The combined proportion of scheduled flights delayed at these major Canadian airports dropped from 1.54% in 2025 to 0.24% in 2026.
NAV Canada Staffing and Operational Investments Help Reduce Delays
NAV Canada, the not-for-profit provider of air traffic control and related services in Canada, credited improvements in its operational performance to investments made ahead of the summer season. The company increased staffing levels to the highest since the pandemic, including bringing management back to frontline air traffic control
duties temporarily and rehiring more than 50 retired controllers. These measures narrowed the air traffic controller staffing deficit from about 200 below target in spring 2026 to approximately 170 below target by August 31, 2026.
NAV Canada Chief Highlights Workforce Effort Amid Ongoing Challenges
Marie-Pier Berman, NAV Canada’s chief of operations, said the organization maintained performance standards through the busiest stretch of the year. She stated, “Today we can say they upheld that standard through the most demanding stretch of the year.” Berman attributed the reduction in delays to the efforts of air traffic controllers, flight service specialists, and support teams who worked consistently during the summer months. She
also emphasized that while staffing rebuild efforts continue, “readiness has never meant promising that no disruption will ever occur.”
Flight Volume and Seasonal Operating Conditions
The four major Canadian airports handled 0.9% more flights during summer 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Vancouver International Airport experienced the most significant drop in delay rates, from 4.42% in 2025 to 0.64% in 2026. Despite the usual operational challenges of August—including hot weather and peak travel demand—flight performance remained stable through the end of summer, notably around the Labour Day holiday period.
