Logan International Airport experienced major disruptions on Monday, September 28, 2026, as 442 flights were delayed and 281 flights canceled by afternoon, officials reported. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a ground delay starting at 7:30 a.m. that day, set to continue until 2:59 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Flight interruptions resulted from a combination of ongoing runway and taxiway construction at Logan and deteriorating weather linked to a nor’easter storm affecting southern New England. The FAA identified construction as the ground delay cause. Massport, the airport operator, said winds on Monday prevented use of a runway closed for
construction. Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan explained, “Given the winds on Monday, planes would normally have used a runway that is closed for construction.” She added, “In the meantime, air traffic controllers are using other runways but cannot move the airplanes as efficiently.”
Inbound flights were delayed an average of 5 hours and 14 minutes during the ground delay. Massport advised travelers to check flight status with their airlines before going to the airport. The combination of severe weather and construction caused widespread cancellations and delays.
The nor’easter brought 3 to more than 7 inches of rain to southern New England
through the weekend, with up to an inch more expected Monday evening. The storm was weakening Monday, with winds subsiding as it moved north. These conditions, along with rink conditions at Logan, continued to disrupt operations.
