More than 400 flights at Boston Logan International Airport were canceled and numerous others delayed beginning Saturday night due to a powerful nor’easter producing strong winds in the US Northeast. The Federal Aviation Administration implemented repeat ground stops for flights bound to Boston, causing widespread travel disruption on Sunday with interruptions expected to continue into Monday.

Traveler Experiences Highlight Disruptions

Boston resident Daryl Donatelli saw his Boston-to-Paris flight canceled Saturday night, was rebooked for Sunday night, and that flight was then also canceled. Donatelli said the FAA’s repeated on-and-off ground stop orders created uncertainty. “I was watching all the FAA warnings, and there was

this ground stop on, then off, then on again and off again, and it’s been really uncertain,” he said. He added, “I just wasn’t expecting it to go for two full days. That’s been the surprise.”

Cheryl Draves, an athletic director and cheer coach for a Florida high school team, said the group’s flights home from Boston to Orlando were canceled on Saturday. Originally scheduled to return Saturday, the team faced an extended stay with flights pushed to Tuesday, then revised to Monday. Draves reported spending six hours at the airport trying to rearrange their travel. She said, “My concern

is more about my girls because, you know, they’re away from home, and they’re away from their parents, and to be thousands of miles—a thousand miles away is a lot for teenage girls.” The group’s hotel stay extended beyond the initial two nights planned to at least four nights due to the delays.

Ongoing Weather Impact and Regional Disruptions

The Federal Aviation Administration’s ground stops were issued because of the strong winds associated with the nor’easter moving through the US Northeast, leading to flight cancellations and delays at Logan Airport. Disruptions that began Saturday night are persisting on Sunday with widespread cancellations recorded and continued impacts

expected through Monday as the storm system maintains strong winds in the region.
