Virgin Australia canceled multiple flights at Melbourne Airport on Sunday, 27 September 2026, stranding Fremantle Dockers fans and other passengers awaiting travel from Melbourne to Fremantle.
Weather and Air Traffic Controls Limit Arrivals
A spokesperson for Virgin Australia attributed the cancellations to severe weather conditions including low visibility, which led air traffic control to restrict arrivals into Melbourne on 26 September 2026. The ensuing delays spilled into operations on 27 September, resulting in flight cancellations.
Passenger Experiences and Rebooking Options
Joel, a stranded passenger, said Virgin Australia presented travelers with the option to either seek alternate carriers or wait for rebooking. Joel reported that the airline informed him he might not be
able to return home until Tuesday. Fremantle Dockers fans among others remain stuck at Melbourne Airport due to the disruptions.
“They basically gave us the option of finding another carrier to get home or wait around and see what we could be rebooked on,” Joel said.
A Virgin Australia spokesperson said, “Low visibility and poor weather led air traffic control to limit arrivals into Melbourne yesterday. The resulting delays have carried into today’s operation, contributing to further delays and some cancellations.” The spokesperson added, “Our team is working hard to get guests to their destinations safely and as soon as
possible, including adding additional services.”
