Venice city officials are considering increasing the daily tourist entry fee for day-trippers to as much as €30 ($34), up from the current range of €5 to €10. The fee, introduced in 2024 as a world first, currently applies only to day visitors and was operational in 2026 on selected days from April 3 to July 26, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Tourist Fee Revenues and Operational Dates

In 2026, Venice collected more than €5.2 million from just under 680,000 entry tickets sold to day-trippers. The fee schedule was limited to specific days and hours during spring and summer to target peak tourist periods and

support city coffers.

Official Comments on Fee Affordability and Deterrence

Budget and Taxation Councillor Michele Zuin told Il Gazzettino that the current €5-10 charge is affordable for virtually everyone and risks losing its deterrent effect. He discussed proposals to raise the fee, noting there is talk of increasing it up to €50 but that authorities may settle on a maximum charge of €30.

Background on Overtourism and Fee Purpose

The tourist fee targets day-trippers to mitigate overtourism and Venice’s ongoing depopulation. It encourages visitors to avoid crowded periods, such as the May Day public holiday, thereby reducing pressure on local infrastructure and improving visitor management.

Traveler Impact, Exemptions and Booking Discounts

Exemptions exist for children under 14, and early

bookers pay a lower rate. The 2027 proposed fee increase is yet to be finalized and requires agreement with the government before implementation.
