The British government announced in April 2026 that it will rejoin the Erasmus+ programme in 2027. Following this, English UK, the national association representing English-language providers, successfully lobbied for simpler entry rules for European Erasmus+ participants.
New Entry Rules Allow ETA or Visitor Visa for Erasmus+ Participants
Effective in 2026, most Erasmus+ participants from EU and EEA countries traveling to the United Kingdom for up to six months will be able to enter using either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or a visitor visa. This change reduces the entry barriers for students and mobility participants involved in the programme.
Previous Visa Requirements and Impact of Changes
Before the update, Erasmus+ participants required more complex or costly visa categories,
such as the Government Authorised Exchange visa, to enter the UK. The revised rules simplify entry procedures, removing administrative burdens and costs associated with prior visa types.
Huan Japes, membership director of English UK, described the rule change as highly positive. He noted the organization’s advocacy aimed at enabling members to offer the full range of Erasmus+ programmes without unnecessary paperwork. Japes emphasized that there is strong interest among English UK members in delivering Erasmus+ schemes, and these new provisions help level competition with providers in Ireland and across the European Union.
The eased entry rules are expected to materially
benefit English UK’s English-language providers by facilitating greater participation in Erasmus+. This aligns with the UK government’s broader objective to support international student mobility and strengthen education partnerships between the UK and European countries.
