A signalling fault caused by a cabling issue disrupted train operations at Manchester Piccadilly on 22 September 2026. Platform 8 was closed, leading to cancellations and alterations of services across several rail operators.
Train Cancellations and Service Changes
Avanti West Coast canceled four trains between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston due to the signalling fault. The affected services included the 06:02 and 06:23 departures from Manchester to London, as well as the 09:13 and 10:13 departures from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.
Northern canceled all services operating between Manchester Piccadilly and Hazel Grove along with those between Piccadilly and Alderley Edge. Other Northern routes departing
from Piccadilly remained unaffected. Passengers with Northern tickets were permitted to use alternative rail services toward Buxton and Crewe via Stockport, Avanti West Coast trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Wilmslow, and the Bee Network 192 bus route connecting Manchester and Hazel Grove.
Incident Timing and Expected Disruption
The signalling fault was reported by Network Rail at 06:06 BST on the morning of 22 September 2026. The disruption was scheduled to continue until approximately 10:00 BST while engineers worked on repairs.

passengers and stated that crews were “working hard to fix the problem” and restore normal service.
