BEML Limited has secured a contract worth over ₹5,400 crore from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to supply, maintain, and support high-speed rolling stock for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor. The announcement was confirmed in a stock exchange filing on 18 September 2026.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor Overview
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor spans 508 kilometres and includes 12 stations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The stations are Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
Indigenous B28 Rolling Stock Development and Specifications
BEML is manufacturing India’s first indigenous high-speed bullet train, designated B28, at its Aditya High-Speed
Rail Complex in Bengaluru. The B28 train is designed with a maximum test speed of 280 kilometres per hour and an operational speed exceeding 250 kmph. Trial runs for the B28 train are scheduled to begin between May and June 2027.
Project Background and Government Support
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is receiving technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan. Initially, the project adopted Japanese Shinkansen technology but encountered high costs and customized requirements. This led the Indian Ministry of Railways to emphasize indigenous manufacturing under the Make in India initiative, resulting in BEML and the Integral Coach Factory jointly developing the B28
train.
As of August 2026, the overall cost estimate for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project doubled to ₹2.1 lakh crore, accelerating the government’s push towards cost-efficient domestic procurement.
Passenger Service and Trial Run Schedule
The first inaugural run on the corridor is expected to cover 100 kilometres between Surat and Vapi, scheduled for August 2027. The advanced rolling stock, with operational speeds above 250 kmph, is planned to enhance travel along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route.
BEML’s Market Position and Order Backlog
With this new ₹5,400 crore NHSRCL order, BEML’s order backlog exceeds ₹16,000 crore, strengthening its status as a major supplier in India’s railway modernization efforts. Earlier in September 2026, BEML secured a
₹180.60 crore contract from Integral Coach Factory for Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, further bolstering its multi-year revenue visibility.
