BEML Limited has secured a contract exceeding ₹5,400 crore from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for the supply and maintenance of high-speed rolling stock on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.
As of July 2026, BEML’s order book totaled ₹16,285 crore. The company reported ₹820 crore in revenue from operations and a consolidated net loss of ₹27.01 crore for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, improving from a loss of ₹64.11 crore in the previous year. This contract significantly expands BEML’s Rail & Metro business segment and strengthens its order book visibility.
Scope of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor covers
508 kilometres with 12 stations located in Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. BEML manufactures India’s first indigenous high-speed bullet train model B28 at the Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru. The B28 train is designed with a maximum test speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed exceeding 250 kmph. Trial runs for this train are scheduled to begin between May and June 2027.
Domestic Manufacturing Shift and Project Funding
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project initially relied on imported Japanese Shinkansen technology. However, rising costs and customized requirements led the Indian Ministry of Railways to prioritize domestic manufacturers.
Under the Government of India’s Make in India initiative, BEML and Integral Coach Factory (ICF) developed standardized high-speed rolling stock, enabling domestic production and maintenance contracts. The total project cost rose to an estimated ₹2.1 lakh crore as of August 2026. The Government of Japan continues to provide technical and financial support for the project.
Upcoming Trial Runs and Related Contracts
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train’s inaugural 100-kilometre run between Surat and Vapi is expected in August 2027. In addition to the NHSRCL contract, BEML received a ₹180.60 crore contract from the Integral Coach Factory in September 2026 to produce Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, further expanding its
rail manufacturing portfolio.
