BEML Limited has been awarded a contract valued at over ₹5,400 crore by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for supplying and maintaining high-speed rolling stock on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.
Details of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor
The high-speed rail corridor extends 508 kilometres, connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. It passes through the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, as well as the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The corridor includes 12 stations: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. The project receives both technical and financial support from the Government of Japan.
BEML’s Manufacturing Role and Train Details
BEML is producing
the indigenous high-speed bullet train, codenamed B28, at its Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru. The B28 train is engineered for a maximum test speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed exceeding 250 kmph. Trial runs on the tracks are scheduled to begin between May and June 2027, with an inaugural 100-kilometre run planned between Surat and Vapi in August 2027.
Financial and Business Impact on BEML
As of July 2026, BEML’s outstanding order book was valued at ₹16,285 crore. The latest NHSRCL contract enhances the company’s Rail & Metro segment by providing manufacturing and maintenance activities over several years. In the first quarter of
fiscal year 2027, BEML reported operating revenues of ₹820 crore and a consolidated net loss of ₹27.01 crore, an improvement from a loss of ₹64.11 crore in the same period the previous year.
Significance for India’s Rail Manufacturing Sector
This contract reinforces India’s commitment to bolstering domestic capabilities in advanced railway technologies, aligning with the Make in India initiative. BEML’s partnership with the Integral Coach Factory, which awarded it a ₹180.60 crore contract in September 2026 for Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, has been instrumental in strengthening its position in the high-speed rail manufacturing ecosystem. The overall Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has an estimated cost of ₹2.1
lakh crore as of late August 2026, reflecting a significant investment in India’s railway modernization and infrastructure expansion.
