BEML Limited has been awarded a contract valued at over ₹5,400 crore by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) for the supply and maintenance of high-speed rolling stock for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor.
The contract includes manufacturing and maintaining trainsets for the 508-kilometre bullet train route connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, enhancing BEML’s role in India’s advanced rail infrastructure development.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor Details
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor spans 508 kilometres across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The corridor plans 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand,
Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.
The project is being executed with technical and financial assistance from the Government of Japan and is considered a flagship initiative in India’s rail modernisation efforts.
BEML’s Manufacturing Capacity and Bullet Train Details
BEML is producing India’s first indigenous high-speed bullet train, codenamed the B28, at the Aditya High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru. The B28 train is designed to run at a maximum test speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed exceeding 250 kmph.
This production facility is a key element in India’s push towards domestic manufacturing of advanced rail technologies under the Make in India initiative.
Project Timelines and Milestones
Trial runs for the B28 bullet
train are expected to commence between May and June 2027 on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. The first 100-kilometre inaugural run will take place between Surat and Vapi by August 2027.
The contract from NHSRCL complements BEML’s existing ₹180.60 crore order from the Integral Coach Factory for Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets received in September 2026.
Corporate Financials and Industry Context
As of July 2026, BEML’s order book stood at ₹16,285 crore, with the NHSRCL contract contributing substantially to this backlog. The company reported ₹820 crore in revenue from operations for Q1 FY27 and a consolidated net loss of ₹27.01 crore, an improvement from a ₹64.11 crore loss
in the same period the previous year.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project cost was estimated to have doubled to ₹2.1 lakh crore by August 2026, intensifying the government’s focus on domestic sourcing to manage rising expenses.
