The Federal Aviation Administration implemented a ground delay program on September 11, 2026, affecting all flights to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport departing from the contiguous United States. The delay, initiated just before 11 a.m., disrupted more than 100 inbound flights on that day, aiming to alleviate congestion caused by ongoing airport operations.
Flight Delay Durations and Timeline
Initially, the ground delay was set to last until 7 p.m. but was extended until 9 p.m. as thunderstorms developed over Central Texas. Flight delays varied widely, with some lasting less than 30 minutes while others exceeded two and a half hours by midday. Shortly before noon, average inbound
delays were approximately 32 minutes, increasing to roughly one hour by mid-afternoon. Flight status boards showed about 115 delayed flights through 7 p.m., and around 95 continued to experience delays up to midnight.
Construction Impact on Airport Operations
The FAA attributed the ground delays to congestion caused by construction crews building two miles of new taxiways in the center of Austin-Bergstrom’s airfield. This taxiway work connects the airport’s east and west sides and replaces existing taxiways removed to make way for a second concourse planned at the facility. The construction reduced taxiway capacity, leading the FAA to regulate inbound flight arrivals to mitigate congestion during
peak operations.
Weather-Related Disruptions
In addition to construction impacts, low cloud cover prompted multiple short ground stops earlier in the day, temporarily halting all arrivals at Austin-Bergstrom. Thunderstorms formed later across Central Texas, including the Interstate 35 corridor, compelling the FAA to extend the ground delay program. These weather conditions compounded delays throughout the afternoon and evening, further affecting inbound flight schedules.
Traveler Advisory and Official Statements
Jim Reynolds, spokesperson for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, said the majority of delays remained under 30 minutes but acknowledged several flights experienced delays exceeding one hour. He advised travelers to monitor their flight status and obtain updates directly from their airlines
to stay informed of schedule changes and delay durations.
