The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground stops at seven major U.S. airports on Monday, August 3, 2026, due to weather and staffing challenges, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations across the country.
American Airlines IT Outage Sparks Nationwide Ground Stop
On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a technology failure caused an IT outage disrupting American Airlines’ connectivity and operations, prompting the FAA to issue a temporary nationwide ground stop for all the carrier’s flights starting at approximately 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
The ground stop remained in place for less than an hour, ending at 7:18 p.m. ET. Despite its brief duration, the stoppage led to hundreds of flight
cancellations and significant delays affecting American Airlines’ schedule across the United States.
Flight Cancellation and Delay Numbers Reach Thousands
On Tuesday, a total of 2,538 flight cancellations occurred within, into, or out of the United States. American Airlines endured the widespread impact, with 1,402 flight delays recorded—accounting for 38% of its total daily flights—and ranking second in cancellations only behind Republic Airlines.
The disruptions extended into the following day. By Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026, there were 407 cancellations nationwide, with American Airlines leading all airlines worldwide at 88 cancellations.
Travelers Report Delays, Limited Compensation Amid Disruptions
Passengers encountered lengthy delays and cancellations, expressing frustration with the airline’s response and compensation measures. Traveler Christina
reported an international flight diverted midway due to aircraft issues, followed by additional boarding delays caused by the IT system outage, resulting in only a $12 voucher for compensation.
Another passenger, Stephen Wetmore, criticized American Airlines for poor transparency and inadequate customer support during the disruptions, describing long wait times and unhelpful staff interactions.
American Airlines Offers Official Statement on Outage
American Airlines released a statement acknowledging the IT issue, confirming the temporary ground stop and assuring customers that systems were restored and flights resumed departing.
“Systems are coming back online now and flights are departing again. We put a temporary ground stop in place while our
teams worked to resolve the issue. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” the airline said.
The ongoing flight cancellations and delays reflect the continued effects of Tuesday’s IT outage combined with previous weather-related FAA ground stops.
