Aeromexico has announced plans to launch a direct flight route connecting Milan Malpensa Airport in Italy with Mexico City International Airport in March 2027. The service will require government approval and will operate using the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
Current Mexico-Italy Air Connectivity and Market Size
Currently, Milan’s only connection to Mexico is via Cancun, served by Neos Air. No nonstop flights link Milan and Mexico City. In 2025, approximately 136,100 two-way passengers traveled between Mexico and Milan, a growth of 2.7% from 2024, making Milan the ninth-largest European city market for Mexico and the second largest in Italy after Rome, which saw about 237,200 passengers.
Aeromexico is the dominant carrier on Mexico-Italy routes, holding 80.5% of capacity exclusively on its Mexico City-Rome service. Neos Air serves the Cancun-Rome and Cancun-Milan routes. Aeromexico also codeshares reciprocally with ITA Airways on the Mexico City-Rome route, facilitating connections throughout Italy.
Expansion Drivers Supported by Fleet and Slot Availability
The planned route expansion follows the delivery of Aeromexico’s 25th Boeing 787 aircraft, increasing its widebody fleet capacity. Additionally, Mexico City International Airport is expected to release about 10 additional slot pairs during the winter 2026-27 season, enabling the carrier to add this long-haul service.

with the new route. Italy ranks among Mexico’s primary source markets for visitors, with Italian arrivals increasing 13.7% year-over-year to 118,242 in 2025, the 13th largest international visitor segment for Mexico.
Passenger Benefits and Mexico City’s Cultural Appeal
If approved, the new flight will offer residents in northern Italy nonstop access to Mexico City, eliminating the need for transfers through Rome or Cancun. Mexico City continues to promote itself as a major cultural destination, featuring historic sites such as the Centro Historico, Chapultepec Park with its museums and castle, the Coyoacan district with the Frida Kahlo Museum, and the Xochimilco canals.

He added, “With this, we will become the only airline in our country to directly connect Mexico City with two of the most iconic Italian destinations, offering greater opportunities to serve a growing demand from passengers travelling both for business and pleasure.”
Mexico City’s cultural calendar for early 2027 includes events such as EDC Mexico (February 19-21), the International Book Fair (February 26-March 7),
the Jungle concert (March 19), the MET Opera production of “Silent Night” (March 20), and the Lavoe Sinfonico salsa concert on March 24.
