Aeromexico announced plans to begin direct flights between Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) in March 2027, contingent on receiving government authorization. The airline will deploy Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft for this new long-haul route.
Direct Milan-Mexico City Service to Fill Market Gap
This launch will make Milan the second Italian city served directly by Aeromexico from Mexico City, joining its existing route to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Currently, no non-stop flights connect Milan and Mexico City. Neos Air operates flights from Cancun to Milan and Rome but does not serve the Mexico City-Milan corridor nonstop.
Passenger Volumes Confirm Market Potential
In 2025, Sabre Market Intelligence reported around 136,100
two-way passengers traveled between Mexico and Milan, reflecting a 2.7% increase over 2024. Milan ranks as Mexico’s ninth-largest European city market and the second-largest within Italy, behind Rome, which handled approximately 237,200 passengers that year.
Aeromexico’s Dominance on Mexico-Italy Routes
OAG data shows Aeromexico holds 80.5% of the capacity on Mexico City to Rome routes. The carrier maintains a reciprocal codeshare agreement with ITA Airways for this route, enabling onward connections across Italy’s domestic network.
Increased Slot Availability and Fleet Capacity
The forthcoming route launch is enabled by Aeromexico’s recent delivery of its 25th Boeing 787 Dreamliner, providing additional long-range capacity. Mexico City International Airport is expected to offer about 10
extra slot pairs in the winter 2026-27 season, supporting increased airline operations.

a key cultural destination with numerous historic sites, museums, and vibrant neighborhoods. Its Centro Historico district features the Zocalo plaza, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the National Palace. Nearby attractions include the Palace of Fine Arts and several major museums. The Chapultepec area hosts the National Museum of Anthropology and Chapultepec Castle.
The 2027 cultural calendar in Mexico City includes significant events such as EDC Mexico at the Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome (19-21 February), the International Book Fair at the Palace of Mining (26 February to 7 March), a Jungle concert at the Palace of Sports (19 March), MET Opera’s “Silent Night”
at the National Auditorium (20 March), and the Lavoe Sinfonico salsa concert (24 March).
New Route’s Impact on Travelers from Northern Italy
With this new nonstop service, travelers from northern Italy will gain direct access to Mexico City without requiring connections through Rome or Cancun. The route is expected to support both growing business travel and tourism demand, particularly given Italy’s status as the 13th largest source market for visitors to Mexico. In 2025, 118,242 air arrivals from Italy were recorded, marking a 13.7% increase from the previous year.
