Aeromexico announced plans to inaugurate direct flights between Milan Malpensa Airport and Mexico City International Airport in March 2027, subject to government approval. The airline will deploy Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft for the long-haul route.
Aeromexico Expands Italian Network
Milan Malpensa will become Aeromexico’s second Italian destination alongside Rome Fiumicino, positioning Aeromexico as the only Mexican carrier to provide nonstop service from Mexico City to two Italian cities. The carrier recently added its 25th Dreamliner to its fleet, enabling the network expansion.
Passenger Traffic and Market Rankings
Approximately 136,100 two-way passengers traveled between Mexico and Milan in 2025, marking a 2.7% increase compared to 2024. Milan ranked as Mexico’s
ninth-largest European city market and the second-largest in Italy behind Rome, which accounted for roughly 237,200 passengers that year. Italy was the 13th largest source market for visitors to Mexico, with 118,242 air arrivals from Italian residents in 2025, a 13.7% year-over-year increase.

Giancarlo Mulinelli, Aeromexico’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales, said, “We are very excited to add the city of Milan to our international network, a destination that will allow us to strengthen the cultural, commercial and business ties between Mexico and Italy.” He added, “With this, we will become the only airline in our country to directly
connect Mexico City with two of the most iconic Italian destinations, offering greater opportunities to serve a growing demand from passengers travelling both for business and pleasure.”
Service Gaps and Airport Slot Availability
Currently, Milan maintains a nonstop connection only with Cancun through Neos Air, while direct Mexico City-Milan flights do not exist. The new route will provide travelers from northern Italy with a direct option to Mexico City, eliminating the need to connect through Rome or Cancun. Aeromexico anticipates receiving around 10 additional slot pairs at Mexico City International Airport during the winter 2026-27 season, coinciding with the airport’s planned capacity increase.
Mexico City’s Cultural Appeal and 2027 Events
Mexico City offers
extensive cultural attractions, including the historic Centro Historico area with landmarks such as the Zocalo, Metropolitan Cathedral, National Palace, and Templo Mayor. Chapultepec park hosts major museums like the National Museum of Anthropology and Chapultepec Castle. The Coyoacan district features the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Anahuacalli Museum, while Xochimilco is known for its canals and chinampas agriculture. In 2027, notable events include EDC Mexico at the Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome (February 19-21), the International Book Fair at the Palace of Mining (February 26-March 7), the Jungle concert at the Palace of Sports (March 19), MET Opera’s Silent Night at the
National Auditorium (March 20), and the Lavoe Sinfonico salsa concert (March 24).
Other Operators and Codeshare Arrangements
Neos Air currently operates flights connecting Milan with Cancun but offers no direct links to Mexico City. Aeromexico maintains a reciprocal codeshare with ITA Airways on the Mexico City-Rome route, facilitating connections throughout Italy. Aeromexico holds 80.5% of the Mexico-Italy market share by capacity on the Mexico City-Rome corridor, with Neos Air covering remaining capacity on Cancun-Italy routes.
