The Federal Aviation Administration implemented weather-related ground stops at seven major U.S. airports on August 25, 2026, causing widespread flight disruptions. Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C., experienced ground stops for the second consecutive day, registering the highest number of cancellations nationwide with 25 departures and 21 arrivals cancelled.

American Airlines and PSA Airlines Face Major Disruptions

American Airlines recorded 30 flight delays at its DCA hub as a result of the operational halts. PSA Airlines accounted for the majority of cancellations and delays at Ronald Reagan Airport, canceling 33 flights and delaying 129 routes from the airport. Thunderstorms in the area were identified as the

cause of the ground stoppages.

Passenger Experiences and Flight Delays

Passengers at Ronald Reagan National Airport reported extended waits followed by cancellations. American Airlines flight AA5128 from Tulsa to DCA, originally scheduled for a 4:17 p.m. departure, was repeatedly delayed before cancellation, frustrating passengers including traveler Travis Chapman, who spent over six hours awaiting departure. Another passenger, AJ, experienced a three-hour delay on an American Airlines flight from Westchester County Airport (HPN) to DCA and faced additional holds upon arrival, resulting in missed connections.

Airline Response and Outlook

American Airlines apologized for the delays and cancellations at DCA, offering assistance to affected customers. The airline acknowledged the frustration caused

by multiple disruptions and missed connections, indicating support available via direct messaging channels. With thunderstorms not forecast for Tuesday, August 26, disruptions at Ronald Reagan National Airport and American Airlines operations are expected to decrease, although cancellations, primarily from PSA Airlines, remained ongoing into the next day.
