The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground stops today at seven major US airports due to severe weather, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations and extensive delays across the country.
Major Airport Disruptions at DCA and ORD
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) faced the highest level of disruption with 53 departure cancellations and 43 arrivals canceled on Sunday, the most among all affected airports. Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) reported over 1,600 delays and 51 cancellations amid weather challenges and an ongoing air show. American Airlines experienced significant impacts at its two major hubs, DCA and ORD.
Traveler Delays and Flight Cancellations
Flight cancellations extended into Monday morning, with DCA reporting
18 canceled flights and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) recording 20 cancellations early Monday. JetBlue’s operations at JFK were disrupted, causing increased cancellations including the complete cancellation of Flight 1880 from Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) to DCA, which stranded over 100 passengers.
Passengers at Nashville International Airport (BNA) experienced delays such as the 30-minute taxiway hold on a flight to DCA reported by traveler Scott Herman. Another traveler, Daniel Baldwin, faced lengthy delays at Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport (DFW) resulting in a nine-hour layover after an initial delay en route to Jackson, Wyoming, as well as a two-hour
delay returning from Jackson that forced an overnight hotel stay in Dallas.
Causes of Flight Disruptions and Airline Impacts
The FAA cited scattered thunderstorms nationwide as the primary reason for the ground stops. Gate congestion amplified delays at Ronald Reagan National Airport. Chicago O’Hare’s delays were also worsened by an air show. Hawaiian Airlines experienced increased cancellations linked to hurricane threats affecting its flight schedule. PSA Airlines reported the most cancellations among U.S. carriers on Sunday with disruptions continuing into Monday.
Rising Cancellations Amid Severe Weather
Hundreds of flights were canceled across seven major U.S. airports including Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport (DFW), Nashville International Airport (BNA),
and Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL). Major carriers United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, JetBlue, PSA Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines faced extensive operational difficulties due to the weather and logistical constraints.
