Costa Rica reported record-breaking numbers in foreign visitor arrivals by air during the first six months of 2026, according to authorities from the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT). Official data confirmed historic growth exceeding the tourism sector’s most optimistic projections for the period.

Growth Across Key International Airports

Passenger arrivals showed sustained momentum at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste. Both airports played a crucial role in solidifying Costa Rica’s appeal across multiple regions, reflecting an upward trend supported by targeted promotional campaigns in key source markets.

Factors Driving Visitor Increases

The surge in visitor numbers was fueled

by increased flight frequencies and a national strategy focused on attracting airlines and establishing non-stop international connections. Costa Rica’s emphasis on sustainable tourism development, including biodiversity conservation and destination safety, also contributed to its competitive positioning in the global market.

Source Markets and Destination Diversity

The rise in arrivals originated primarily from traditional markets in North America and Europe. Visitors sought a variety of destinations, including Costa Rica’s Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, volcanoes, and cloud forests, distributing tourism benefits across both coastal and rural communities.

The expansion in foreign arrivals translated into broad economic advantages for the country. Tourism authorities noted that the data reinforce

Costa Rica’s image as a mature, safe, and highly attractive destination. These outcomes stem from continued collaboration between public and private sectors, generating concrete benefits for the national economy.

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, officials and industry leaders maintain a positive outlook with a focus on the year-end high season. Efforts are also underway to strengthen tourism infrastructure to preserve the quality of visitor services amid ongoing demand growth.
