The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enacted ground stops today, August 18, 2026, at nine major airports across the Northeast United States in response to forecasted severe weather conditions. Delta Air Lines issued passenger warnings and flexible rebooking options at these hubs, anticipating widespread delays and cancellations linked to thunderstorms expected during Thursday afternoon and evening.
Delta and Northeast Airports See Significant Cancellations
LaGuardia Airport in New York City reported the highest number of cancellations nationwide, reaching 43 as of early Thursday morning. Earlier in the week, the airport saw 37 departures and 27 arrivals canceled. Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey also experienced operational impacts, with
27 cancellations noted during earlier disruptions. Airlines with substantial operational presence in New York and Boston, including Delta Air Lines and JetBlue, face notable challenges with flight interruptions as a result of the FAA ground stops.
Delta’s Rebooking Policy for Affected Travelers
In response to these disruptions, Delta Air Lines is waiving change fees for customers needing to rebook their trips. The waiver applies for travel reissued on or before August 10, 2026, for flights originally booked on August 6 and 7, 2026. Rebooked tickets must remain within the same cabin of service and maintain the original destination to qualify for the waiver. According to Delta,
fare differences may apply if the original booking class is not maintained during rebooking.
Passenger Experiences at LaGuardia Highlight Delays
Travelers at LaGuardia have reported extensive delays preceding the severe weather. Passenger Mark Haubry experienced a nearly three-hour delay on Wednesday attributed to air traffic control issues, separate from the impending thunderstorms. Haubry expressed frustration, stating, “@Delta fails again! Another week, a fresh excuse to delay flights, disrupt plans and disappoint customers. A typical flight from #Indy to @LGAairport is delayed over 2 hours due to air traffic.” Another traveler, Rudi Bester, reported delays on flight DL2396 due to staffing shortages, noting, “Now @Delta – which
only has one pilot – further delays LGA – PBI because they can’t find a pilot for DL2396.”
Severe Weather and Air Traffic Control Delays Cause Disruptions
The Northeast is forecasted to endure thunderstorms and potentially damaging wind gusts throughout Thursday afternoon and evening. These conditions have prompted the FAA to enforce ground stops to manage airspace congestion safely. The severe weather following ongoing air traffic control delays and airline staffing issues has contributed to significant operational challenges, particularly at New York City airports. The FAA’s actions aim to mitigate risks amid expected traffic management constraints.
Travel Outlook as Weather Disruptions Continue
Travelers using Northeast U.S. airports should anticipate continued delays and flight cancellations throughout
August 18. The FAA’s ground stops, combined with the approaching thunderstorms, are expected to further strain airline operations, especially at hubs in New York and Boston. Delta’s flexible rebooking approach provides some relief for affected passengers amid ongoing service disruptions caused by severe weather and operational constraints.
