The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at nine airports across the Northeastern United States on August 6, 2026, due to severe thunderstorms forecasted to bring damaging wind gusts in New York, New Jersey, and surrounding areas. These measures follow earlier ground stops at seven major airports earlier in the week. The disruption has caused significant delays and cancellations, particularly at New York-area hubs.
Delta Air Lines Offers Flexible Rebooking Amid Disruptions
In response to the expected severe weather and related flight disruptions, Delta Air Lines implemented travel warnings and expanded rebooking options at nine U.S. hubs in the Northeast. The airline is waiving change fees for
affected customers if rebooking is done for flights on August 6 or 7, 2026, and tickets are reissued by August 10, 2026. The new itinerary must maintain the original cabin and destination to avoid fare differences unless class-to-class restrictions apply, as stated in Delta’s official policy.
LaGuardia and Newark Experience Highest Cancellations
Flight cancellations began escalating on August 5, 2026, with LaGuardia Airport (LGA) recording the highest number in the U.S. that day: 37 departures and 27 arrivals were canceled. By early Thursday morning, August 6, cancellations at LaGuardia climbed to 43 and were projected to rise further as thunderstorms worsened. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
held the second-highest cancellation tally on August 5 with 27 canceled flights.
Traveler Disruptions at LaGuardia Include Delays and Staffing Issues
Travelers at LaGuardia reported multi-hour delays, sometimes approaching three hours, attributable to air traffic control constraints and crew shortages. Passenger Mark Haubry shared that delays over two hours occurred from Indianapolis to LaGuardia due to air traffic problems on August 5. Additionally, Delta flight DL2396 was specifically delayed because the airline could not secure sufficient pilot staffing, with traveler Rudi Bester noting the flight was operating with just one pilot.
Officials and Experts Anticipate Continuing Delays
Delta confirmed its rebooking policy for affected flights, emphasizing the waiver of fare differences if conditions for rebooking
are met by August 10, 2026. Aviation expert JonNYC commented on social media that airlines are preparing for substantial disruptions on August 6, particularly in New York, with Delta developing a “NYC cancel package” to address expected air traffic control delays. The FAA’s ground stops at nine Northeastern airports reflect caution as scattered thunderstorms and damaging winds move through the region, affecting major hubs including LaGuardia, Newark, and Boston.
