Delta Issues Warnings and Rebooking Offers

Delta Air Lines has issued official traveler warnings to customers at the nine affected Northeast airports, advising them to anticipate significant delays and possible cancellations. The airline has offered flexible rebooking options for flights on August 6 and 7, 2026, valid through August 10, 2026, waiving fare change fees if the new travel occurs in the same cabin and destination as

originally booked. This offer corresponds to the weather-related ground stops and expected air traffic control disruptions.

Disruptions had already been underway at New York and New Jersey airports, particularly at LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, before the latest ground stops. Delta has specifically prepared a New York City cancel package in anticipation of significant air traffic control delays on August 18, 2026.

Flight Cancellations and Delays at LaGuardia and Newark

Among U.S. airports, LaGuardia Airport recorded the highest number of cancelled flights, with 43 cancellations reported as of early morning on August 18, 2026. The number is expected to rise as severe weather moves into the

area. Newark Liberty International Airport registered 27 cancellations.

On August 17, 2026, the day before the ground stops, the FAA reported nearly three hours of ground delays at LaGuardia Airport. These continued air traffic control challenges have impacted Delta flights, with some passengers reporting extended delays unrelated to weather.

Operational Disruptions and Passenger Experiences

Delta flight DL2396 experienced delays due to staffing problems, specifically a pilot shortage causing further disruption between LaGuardia and Palm Beach International Airport (PBI). Delta passengers have publicly reported these delays on social media, citing air traffic control and staffing issues as causes for disruption.

Delta customer Mark Haubry noted a

two-hour delay from Indianapolis to LaGuardia on August 17, attributed to air traffic congestion rather than weather yet indicative of regional operational strain. Another passenger, Rudi Bester, highlighted the staffing-related delay of flight DL2396 due to the unavailability of a second pilot.

Delta’s Official Rebooking Policy and Warnings

Delta’s official communication states: “Delta: a NYC cancel package is in the works for tomorrow. The company is expecting weather conditions to drive significant ATC delays in NYC Thursday.” The airline confirmed that fare differences will be waived when rebooked travel occurs on or before August 10, 2026, within the same cabin and destination, though additional fare differences

may apply if the original booking class is not maintained.
