The disruption forced the diversion of 29 flights from Denver to Colorado Springs Airport (COS), significantly impacting airline operations.
Earlier in August, Denver recorded a high temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit on August 3, surpassing previous records. On August 17, a cold front collided with the ongoing heat wave, creating unstable atmospheric conditions. This led to strong wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour and a rapid overnight temperature drop of 50 to 60 degrees. Additionally,
wildfire smoke drifting from the Pacific Northwest worsened air quality during the event.
Passengers reported experiencing intense turbulence while inbound to Denver, described as some of the worst in their flying history. Five passengers required medical attention due to injuries sustained in the turbulence, with at least one transported by ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition. Some flight crews reached their duty limits, forcing passengers to seek alternate transportation, including Uber.
The weather caused significant delays for flights at Denver International. Approximately 40% of outbound flights and 32% of inbound flights lost on-time status on August 17. Some
connecting flights suffered delays exceeding three hours, with at least one connection pushed from 9 PM to midnight. Airlines including Southwest, United, and SkyWest were involved in repositioning aircraft back to Denver following diversions to Colorado Springs and Hayden Airport. Overall, 3% of total flights were canceled amid the severe weather.
Denver’s geographic location contributes to frequent turbulence, stemming from wind shear and mountain altitude conditions. After the event, the turbulent air mass shifted northeast, affecting airspace over the Great Lakes and parts of Eastern New York and New England. By the following day, atmospheric conditions near Denver improved, with
temperatures returning to the mid-70s to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a reduction in heat advisories.
