The severe turbulence and unstable atmospheric conditions originated from the collision of a record-setting heat front and a cold front over the Front Range of Colorado. Air quality
alerts due to drifting wildfire smoke were already in effect. The turbulent air mass subsequently moved northeast toward the Great Lakes region, affecting airspace over eastern New York and New England early Tuesday. Denver’s location near mountainous terrain combined with wind shear contributed to traditionally challenging flight operations, exacerbated during this weather event.
