Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand decreased 2.9% year on year from January 1 to August 8, 2026, as reported by KResearch. Despite this contraction, the decline is less severe than earlier estimates suggested, indicating a slowdown in the tourism sector with emerging signs of recovery toward the year’s final months.

Year-End Events Drive Positive Outlook for Tourism

The tourism outlook for the last quarter of 2026 improves due to several major international events hosted by Thailand. The country will hold the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, alongside the global music event Tomorrowland Thailand and the annual New Year celebrations.

These gatherings are expected to attract foreign visitors and increase tourism-related spending. Additionally, reduced airfares and airline promotions from August to November stimulate travel demand, particularly among visitors from Europe and the Middle East, assuming no escalation of Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions that might disrupt airspace availability.

Regional Competition and Economic Challenges Affect Thailand’s Market Share

Thailand is experiencing a loss in regional tourism market share as neighboring countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia continue to grow their visitor numbers. While Thailand’s arrivals declined, markets such as China and Malaysia are showing preferences for other destinations. Economic pressure in key short-haul source markets also undermines growth prospects, complicating recovery

efforts in 2026.

Economic Conditions in Source Markets Impact Tourist Flows

Outbound travel from South Korea fell 5.9% in 2026 amid a weak stock market that has diminished household wealth, significant since South Korea ranks as Thailand’s fifth-largest tourism source. Indonesian tourist arrivals to Thailand dropped sharply by 23.2% during January to July 2026, influenced by a depreciation of the Indonesian rupiah by over 7% against the Thai baht. Correspondingly, advance flight schedules from India, Indonesia, and South Korea were reduced by 2.1% between August and November, reflecting ongoing uncertainties in the Asia-Pacific region.

Shifts in Tourist Spending Patterns

Average spending per foreign visitor increased by 2% to 49,000 baht in 2026. The

share of tourists spending above the average rose to 53%, up from 30% before the COVID-19 pandemic. This segment primarily consists of travelers from long-haul markets including Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Australia, and China. Meanwhile, middle-income travelers show a tendency to reduce spending on gifts and souvenirs, opting instead for community-based tourism experiences that provide better value.

Thailand’s foreign tourism revenue is projected to reach 1.54 trillion baht for the year, underscoring the sector’s ongoing economic significance despite the challenges faced in 2026.
