The Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground stop at Denver International Airport on August 15, 2026, starting at 3:25 p.m. due to severe thunderstorms affecting the Denver metro area and Castle Rock. The weather resulted in 689 flight delays and 22 cancellations, according to FlightAware, with more than 700 flights affected in total during the disruption.

Airline Delays and Cancellations During Ground Stop

The ground stop, which was lifted at 4 p.m., coincided with significant operational interruptions for major carriers. United Airlines recorded 216 flight delays and four cancellations. Southwest Airlines faced 249 delayed flights and three cancellations, while SkyWest reported 157 delays and 10 cancellations. Frontier

Airlines canceled eight flights during the ground stop. By 4:30 p.m., ongoing weather impacts led FlightAware to report 91 cancellations and 708 delays at Denver International Airport. At that time, SkyWest had 38 canceled and 121 delayed flights; United had 34 canceled and 265 delayed; Southwest logged 14 canceled and 211 delayed; and Frontier had five canceled and 49 delayed flights.

Meteorological Causes of the Disruption

The ground stop resulted from severe thunderstorms producing heavy rain, hail, and flash flooding risks. A surge of strong monsoon moisture contributed to some of Denver’s heaviest single-day rainfall of 2026. This meteorological activity aligns with the North American

Monsoon pattern, which typically pushes subtropical moisture into Colorado from mid-July through August. The storms develop rapidly as convective cells build along the Colorado Front Range foothills, generating dangerous wind shear and strong outflow winds that interfere with runway operations at Denver International Airport.

Passenger Impact and Delay Durations

Travelers at Denver International Airport experienced widespread delays and cancellations due to the weather-related ground stop. Departures bound for Denver saw average delays of 114 minutes, according to CBS Colorado. FlightAware data indicated average delays of roughly two hours at 4:30 p.m. The disruption affected over 700 flights during peak travel times, significantly impacting airline schedules

and passenger itineraries throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Official Statements and Weather Warnings

The FAA stated the ground stop was implemented because thunderstorms encroached on final approach paths at Denver International Airport, reducing the airport’s capacity to accept incoming flights. Initial projections anticipated the ground stop lasting until 4 p.m., with a more than 60% probability of extension. The FAA later expected ground delay programs to continue until at least 9:59 p.m. CBS Colorado meteorologist Callie Zanandrie highlighted ongoing risks of heavy rainfall and flash flooding across the Front Range during the storm event.

Due to its high elevation and exposure to convective storms, the FAA classifies DEN among the “Core 30” major airports most susceptible to weather-related ground stops and delay programs. This summer has seen repeated air traffic disruptions tied to monsoon storms, including a previous ground stop on

August 12, reflecting ongoing vulnerability to thunderstorms along the Colorado Front Range.
