Severe flooding struck the central terminal area (CTA) of Heathrow Airport on Saturday, 15 August 2026, completely blocking vehicle access to Terminals 2 and 3. All main incoming roads to these terminals were closed, halting vehicular traffic amid one of the airport’s busiest periods during the summer school holidays.
Heathrow Issues Road Travel Ban to Terminals 2 and 3
Heathrow Airport issued an urgent travel advisory instructing passengers not to travel by road to Terminals 2 and 3. Rail services such as the Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line, and Piccadilly Line were recommended as alternatives. Passengers who must use a car are directed to park at Terminals 4 or 5 and
transfer to Terminals 2 and 3 via the free inter-terminal rail service or to use local rail stations for onward travel.
Flights Continue as Scheduled Despite Road Closures
Despite flooding and road closures, flights at Heathrow remain operational as scheduled. Airport management warned road travel to Terminals 2 and 3 would likely cause missed flights due to total gridlock. Passengers are advised to allocate extra time for journeys and consider rail transit options to avoid delays and heavy congestion inside terminals.
Response Efforts Underway to Clear Flooding
Heathrow Airport engineering teams and local authorities are pumping out floodwaters and assessing any structural damage within the central terminal area. Efforts are ongoing to clear
the blocked road network around Terminals 2 and 3 with teams working to restore normal access as quickly as possible.
Peak Summer Travel and Cause Investigation
The flooding incident occurred during peak school summer holiday travel, following Heathrow’s recent summer peak of 267,000 passengers in a single day. Officials are investigating the cause, with a separate source identifying a burst water main beneath Inner Ring Road West in the CTA as likely. The exact origin remains under review.

A Heathrow Airport spokesman said: “Flooding in the central terminal area has resulted in ongoing road closures restricting access to Terminals 2 and 3. Passengers traveling to or
from either of these terminals today must not travel by road. Passengers are strongly advised to use Heathrow Express, Elizabeth Line and Piccadilly Line rail services where possible. Any passengers that must travel by car must use Park and Ride, head to Terminals 4 or 5 and take free rail services from there, or change at local rail stations. Please allow extra time for your journey. Our teams are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, we apologise for any disruption caused.”
