CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive delivered the first seven of 40 three-car trainsets for Shanghai Metro Line 22 by August 13, 2026. These trainsets include silicon carbide auxiliary converters and oil-free air compressors to enhance energy efficiency and lower maintenance demands. The trains operate at a maximum speed of 120 km/h and employ GoA4 unattended automation technology.
Route and Infrastructure Details
Line 22 will span 43 km, connecting Pudong’s Jinji Road station to Yu’an station on Chongming Island through Changxing Island. Most of the line, 41 km, runs underground and features eight stations. It will be Shanghai’s first metro line to cross the Yangtze River,
incorporating the longest river crossing on any Chinese metro network.
Design and Operational Features
The trains’ interior and exterior designs are inspired by Chongming Island’s natural landscape and Chinese cultural motifs such as terraced fields and reed beds. The trainsets support automatic coupling and uncoupling during service, allowing adjustments to train length to match passenger demand. This contract is Shanghai Metro’s first to include a long-term rolling stock maintenance agreement.
Line 22’s automated trains and adjustable configurations are expected to improve cross-river connectivity and service efficiency once the line opens by the end of 2026.
