Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) introduced three new seasonal nonstop routes for 2026, operated by Alaska Airlines, to Boise, Boston, and Spokane. Additional seasonal Wednesday flights launched between Anchorage and San Diego, as well as Anchorage and Sacramento. American Airlines began a seasonal route linking Anchorage with Phoenix from May through September 8, 2026. Southwest Airlines commenced seasonal service to Anchorage in May 2026.
ANC Leads US in Cargo Volume and Passenger Growth
According to Airports Council International World rankings, ANC holds the top spot for cargo volume in the United States and ranks third globally. This status is supported by the airport’s strategic location near the Pacific
Great Circle route, making it a critical hub for carriers like UPS and FedEx to refuel, switch crews, and sort cargo destined for Asia and the Lower 48 United States.
ANC sees about 5 million passengers annually. During the first half of 2026, the airport recorded an 11 percent year-over-year increase in seat capacity, leading all medium and large hub airports nationally. Alaska International Airport System Development Manager Teri Lindseth attributes this growth to increased demand for travel between Alaska and the Lower 48.
Twenty-Year Master Plan Addresses Capacity and Infrastructure Improvements
To accommodate ongoing growth, ANC approved a comprehensive twenty-year master plan focusing on terminal expansion, increased
gate capacity, enhanced passenger services, upgraded cargo facilities, expanded parking, and modernization of operational technology. Airport officials plan to add hundreds of parking spaces, with long-term proposals for parking structures still under evaluation.
A new air traffic control tower, designed to stand 300 feet tall and be the tallest occupied structure in Alaska, was planned by Stantec. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restarted the bidding process due to initial proposals exceeding a $120 million budget, delaying construction indefinitely. The FAA now requires bidders to be capable of handling projects at or above this valuation.
Expanded Flight Options Improve Connectivity
Alaska Airlines’ new nonstop seasonal
routes to Boise, Boston, and Spokane, plus added midweek flights to San Diego and Sacramento, improve travel options for residents and visitors. Marilyn Romano, Alaska Airlines regional vice president for Alaska, noted the convenience for Alaskans to visit family and explore new destinations.
American Airlines initiated a seasonal Anchorage-Phoenix route in May 2026, running through early September. Southwest Airlines’ seasonal service starting in May 2026 provides passengers with increased carrier choices and competitive options. Southwest’s COO Andrew Watterson expressed appreciation for the warm reception from Alaska officials.
Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities Commissioner Ryan Anderson said the addition
of Southwest strengthens global connectivity, supports tourism and business, and drives economic growth.
Passenger Amenities and Concessions Recognized
ANC ranked first in two Top 50 US airport concessions categories in the 2025 Airport Experience Fact Book, reflecting strong sales and passenger service. The airport’s concessions program balances local and national brands, enhancing traveler experience and supporting local businesses.
Passenger amenities include family rooms, adult changing stations, pet relief areas, a meditation room, and the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, which offers discreet identification for travelers needing additional assistance.
The airport continues incremental infrastructure improvements while awaiting the new tower construction timeline.
