Riviera Travel’s Operational Response to River Navigation Challenges
The UK-based operator deployed a dedicated incident team to handle disruptions and reinforced on-board and head-office staff, including additional cruise directors. Riviera also increased call-centre capacity and coordinated closely with travel agents. Daily updates on river conditions and operational status are published through its travel updates hub. Passengers receive notifications approximately 14 days, 7 days, and 72 hours before scheduled
departures.
Passenger Options Amid Cancellations and Itinerary Changes
Passengers affected by cancellations or itinerary modifications can choose to transfer their booking to another Riviera holiday in 2026 or 2027, opt for an alternative river cruise on the Douro, Seine, or Rhône rivers, or receive a full refund where no equivalent option is feasible. European and global escorted tours are also available as alternatives. Riviera advises travelers considering near-term departures on the Rhine, Danube, or Moselle to select later dates due to ongoing water level uncertainty.
If the replacement holiday costs less than the original booking, passengers will be refunded the price difference. For more expensive alternatives, Riviera
contributes £250 per person towards the additional cost. Those who opt for refunds receive a 15% Welcome Home Offer, increased from the standard 10%, valid for six months on future European river cruises in 2026 or 2027. Compensation or goodwill offers for mid-voyage itinerary changes will be assessed individually after each voyage.
Low Water Levels Also Affect Commercial Shipping on the Rhine
Low water levels have impacted not only river cruises but also commercial traffic, with the Kaub section of the Rhine in Germany particularly affected. This critical navigation point has experienced significant restrictions for shipping, reflecting the severity of drought conditions that have persisted after weeks of high temperatures
and limited rainfall across parts of Europe.

Post-cruise surveys for July departures on the Rhine and Danube showed an average trust score of 8.6 out of 10 and positive sentiment close to 88%, according to Riviera Travel. These figures indicate a resilient passenger response to the operational measures implemented during this period of river navigation challenges.
