A 90-second power outage occurred at Network Rail’s Manchester Rail Operating Centre on 6 August 2026 at 13:41 BST, disrupting signalling systems across the North West of England rail network. The brief failure triggered widespread signalling malfunctions leading to train delays and cancellations throughout 6 August and continuing into 7 August.

Network Rail’s Restoration Efforts Following Outage

Network Rail engineers worked overnight on 6 August to reboot and repair signalling systems affected by the outage. Full signalling restoration was achieved late on the evening of 6 August, allowing most train services to resume normal operation on 7 August morning. However, some TransPennine Express services remained disrupted

due to trains and crews being out of position.

Rail Service Disruptions Across North West England

The power cut led to major delays and cancellations across the North West rail network, affecting routes controlled from the Manchester Rail Operating Centre, including service disruptions at Manchester Piccadilly station. Passengers were advised to check travel information on 7 and 8 August as some disruption persisted. SP Electricity North West reported the outage impacted over 400 postcodes around the Harpurhey area of east Manchester, including the Rail Operating Centre site.

Causes and Technical Challenges Behind the Outage

The power failure at the Manchester Rail Operating Centre caused signalling control systems to fail. Although backup systems exist, some

communication elements did not respond as expected and required reconfiguration or replacement. Some signalling controls also sustained damage, extending recovery time. Network Rail’s consolidation of signalling from hundreds of older signal boxes into 12 Rail Operating Centres centralizes control but increases risk of extensive disruption if one centre suffers failure.

Official Statements and Network Rail Response

Chris Wright, Network Rail’s North West Route Director, expressed gratitude to passengers for their patience and confirmed the scale of recovery work. Wright stated they “didn’t experience a 90-second interruption” due to longer system recovery and added that some communication systems “did not respond how we would have expected, and

then needed reconfiguring and replacing.” Network Rail publicly apologized for the disruption and continues investigations to determine why some systems failed to respond correctly.

Context of Funding and Organisational Changes

Network Rail operates under five-year government funding settlements, with £44.1 billion allocated for 2024-2029. The organization faces pressure from inflation, extreme weather, and job cuts, which raise concerns about infrastructure resilience. The UK government plans to merge passenger rail services and infrastructure management under Great British Railways, abolishing Network Rail as a separate entity. The Manchester outage highlights risks associated with centralizing signalling control within a limited number of centres under budget constraints.
