Major river cruise brands including Uniworld, Viking, and TravelMarvel have adjusted
embarkation points and rerouted sailings in response to these conditions. Uniworld’s SS Emilie on the Danube in early August 2026 was unable to proceed beyond Vilshofen, Germany, omitting scheduled stops at Deggendorf, Regensburg, and Nuremberg.

from Amsterdam to Basel. Guests spent 24 hours on the ship in Koblenz, Germany, followed by a five-hour bus transfer to Strasbourg, France, to board a sister ship. Viking’s spokesperson explained this strategy allows guests and their luggage to transfer to identical vessels positioned strategically on different river sections, helping maintain itineraries.

Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic, sailed on Uniworld’s SS Emilie and encountered missed stops and consecutive bus trips. She said, “While one bus trip is doable, multiple bus trips – one day after another – is not ideal. But there were no alternative onboard activities
added.”
Travelmation river cruise specialist Emma Guse reported clients had to board Danube cruises from alternate ports up to 60 miles away when Budapest embarkation was not possible. She noted bus transportation replaced docking in central cities, which diminishes the experience of sailing into historic locations.
