According to Porter Airlines, the child was standing in their seat and would not secure the seatbelt despite efforts by the accompanying parent and the crew. These attempts to have the child comply were unsuccessful. Citing safety protocols, the crew decided the aircraft could not take off under this unsafe condition and returned to the terminal, removing both the child and the parent
from the flight.
Passenger Delay and Flight Rebooking
The removal process, along with required paperwork updates, led to all passengers disembarking from the plane. The delay caused the flight to miss the runway closing time, which occurred after midnight — specifically around 12:30 a.m. The child had been on the plane for nearly an hour by 11:30 p.m. Passengers affected by the cancellation were rebooked on flights scheduled for the following day.

Porter Airlines spokesperson Brad Cicero apologized for the disruption, stating, “We apologise for the effect this had on other passengers, who were able to depart on a flight the following day.” Child aviation
safety expert Lia Tuso explained that the crew’s actions prioritized passenger safety. “Unrestrained children can become projectiles,” Tuso said, referencing the risks during turbulence.
Passenger Aryeh Kozuch described the child’s behavior as fearful, noting that the child repeatedly hid under the seat and slid out from underneath when forced into the seatbelt. Kozuch commented, “This was a child that was in a tube with 150 people … They’re obviously terrified, and their response was to try and hide under the seat in front of them.”
