Train operations between Rome and Florence will be suspended from August 10 to 28, 2026, to allow significant maintenance and infrastructure upgrades on the rail lines between Chiusi and Orvieto. The suspension covers both the high-speed Direttissima line and the conventional Florence-Rome route.
€6 Million Maintenance Investment Includes Tunnel, Viaduct, and Bridge Repairs
The maintenance program involves a total investment of approximately €6 million, with about €5 million allocated for the Direttissima segment between Chiusi and Orvieto. This work focuses on critical structures such as the Fabro tunnel and the Paglia viaduct near Orvieto. On the conventional line, nearly €1 million is being spent on extraordinary maintenance, including repairs to
the Riomaggiore railway bridge and the installation of a second shelter at the Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station.
More than 80 technicians from RFI and contractors will be engaged daily on the Direttissima worksites, supported by construction vehicles and trains, while over 30 technicians will work on the conventional line maintenance activities.
All Train Services Affected with Schedule Changes and Longer Journey Times
High-speed, intercity, and regional trains on the Rome-Florence corridor will be impacted during the closure, with all services suspended between August 10 and 28. Train companies have already updated their timetables to reflect the suspension and changes to travel times. Passengers will encounter longer journey durations and rescheduled connections throughout
this period, with advisories to verify connection times before traveling.
The infrastructure company managing the works, RFI, scheduled the maintenance in summer to reduce disruption, aiming to improve reliability and regularity on this essential rail axis.
Restoration Phase From August 29 to 31 Includes Reduced Train Speeds
Following the main maintenance window, a restoration phase will run from August 29 to 31. During these days, trains will resume service over the affected sections but must operate at reduced speeds due to ongoing technical checks after renovations. This slowdown may extend travel times by 5 to 10 minutes until full inspections are complete and speed limits are lifted after August 31.
Concurrent Maintenance on Milan-Bologna High-Speed Line
The
Rome-Florence work coincides with another maintenance period between August 10 and 17 on the Milan-Bologna high-speed rail corridor. These simultaneous projects reflect broader summer infrastructure upkeep on Italy’s high-speed rail network.
