Severe thunderstorms over the New York metropolitan area on August 8, 2026, forced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue ground stops at Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport. The weather event caused the cancellation of 930 flights across the three airports combined.

Ground Stops and Delays at New York Airports

The FAA imposed ground stops at Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia throughout the day as severe thunderstorms moved through the region. The ground stop at LaGuardia and JFK was lifted by approximately 8:30 PM Eastern Time on August 8, while Newark’s ground stop remained in effect until roughly 10:00 PM ET. Arrival

flights at Newark experienced average delays of about one hour and 15 minutes due to ongoing FAA delay programs addressing weather and staffing constraints.

Newark Liberty operates under a federally imposed cap of 72 aircraft movements per hour, a restriction effective through October 24, 2026, which slows the airport’s recovery from weather disruptions. Additionally, since July 2024, Newark’s radar approach control responsibilities were transferred from the New York TRACON facility to the Philadelphia TRACON, impacting how the airport sequences arrivals during high demand periods.

Airline Travel Waivers Allow Free Rebooking and Cancellations

Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines issued travel

waivers enabling passengers on affected flights to rebook or cancel without penalty. American Airlines’ waiver applies to tickets booked through August 5 for travel through August 9, with changes required by August 9, 2026. Delta’s waiver covers flights between August 6 and 8, with rebooking permitted through August 11. United Airlines’ waiver covers travel from August 5 to 10, JetBlue’s waiver covered August 7 travel with rebookings allowed until August 12, and Southwest and Alaska also issued waivers covering disruptions on August 6 and 7.

Waivers generally do not permit passengers to switch between the New York airports without paying

any fare difference, applying instead only to the originally booked city-pair.

NJ Transit Rail Suspension Adds to Passenger Challenges

Rail service by NJ Transit was suspended on August 8, 2026, due to the storms, complicating ground transportation to Newark Liberty Airport and other destinations in the New York metro area. Passengers using NJ Transit to reach the airports during this period faced additional travel difficulties.

FAA Official Statement and Passenger Rights

The FAA attributed the disruptions to “severe weather and staffing constraints at the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center,” located in Ronkonkoma, Long Island. This center manages high-altitude enroute airspace for the region, simultaneously affecting all three New York airports when traffic

is constrained.

Passengers whose flights were cancelled are entitled to a full cash refund if choosing not to accept airline rebooking offers, as mandated by federal consumer protection rules. This refund right applies independently of any airline-issued waiver. Flight status updates are available from the FAA National Airspace System Status page and FlightAware, which provide real-time information on ongoing ground stops, delay programs, and cancellations. Travelers faced with cancellations or delays at Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia on August 8 are advised to consult these sources for the most current flight statuses.
