Jinmao Group has officially resumed independent operation of its hotel business effective August 2026. The Hyatt Regency Chongming Shanghai Jinmao ended its cooperative relationship with Hyatt Group and was rebranded as Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel, now independently operated by Jinmao as the property owner.
Jinmao’s History of Cooperation with International Brands
Since entering the high-end hotel market in 2007 with the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Jinmao Tower Shanghai, Jinmao Group has cooperated extensively with international hotel groups including Hyatt. Hyatt Regency Chongming Shanghai Jinmao opened in 2014 as a flagship project under this partnership, leveraging Chongming Island’s ecological advantages to deliver a low-density resort experience with
comprehensive catering, conference, and leisure facilities. The hotel’s weekday occupancy rate consistently exceeded 50% during its operation under Hyatt, serving vacation and corporate team-building markets in the Yangtze River Delta.
Shift Toward Self-Owned Hotel Brands
Jinmao’s hotel business is transitioning from relying on international brands toward managing its own branded hotel portfolio. This follows over 20 years of operational experience gained through partnerships with global operators. Since 2021, Jinmao has launched five self-owned hotel brands, including Jinmao Yiyin, Jinmao Joy, and Jinmao Pure, aiming to adapt products to Chinese market needs and local asset characteristics.
Drivers Behind Independent Operation
The decision to resume independent management reflects changing market realities.
In China’s high-end hotel segment, the ability of international brands to attract customers is diminishing. Additionally, fixed annual brand management fees from global operators are now considered rigid costs rather than value-added services. Jinmao’s accumulated operational capabilities and cost-effective self-operation model support this transition amid oversupply in the luxury hotel market.
Jinmao’s Self-Owned Brands and Market Positioning
Jinmao has developed three main self-owned brands tailored to different segments: Jinmao Joy focuses on urban business and complex accommodations with existing properties in Ningbo and Jiangyin, where average daily room rates hover around 700 yuan with occupancy exceeding 60% in Ningbo. Jinmao Yiyin targets resort and natural resource-oriented
hotels exemplified by Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel and Taicang Jinmao Yiyin Rose Manor. Jinmao Pure specializes in high-end boutique travel, with the Lijiang Jinmao Pure Snow Mountain Hotel as its flagship property.
Operational Infrastructure and Traveler Impact
Jinmao has built a hotel commercial management platform responsible for brand standards, operational systems, and membership services to support its independent hotel operations. With independent management, Jinmao offers hotel products that incorporate local natural and cultural resources, providing differentiated experiences compared to standardized international brands. Business and resort travelers in targeted Chinese regions will now encounter Jinmao’s self-owned brands, reflecting a shift from global brand dependence to
localized service models.
