On July 28, 2026, Viking Cruises’ river vessel Viking Ullur ran aground on the Danube River near Vidin, Bulgaria, while carrying 186 passengers and 52 crew. The ship contacted a sandbank amid historically low water levels on Europe’s second-longest river, forcing a halt in its scheduled itinerary that was set to conclude July 30.

Bulgaria’s Border Police coordinated the evacuation after the ship stopped to take on supplies. Due to access limitations, a second rescue vessel was deployed to safely transfer all passengers and crew to shore. No injuries were reported during the operation. Following evacuation, guests proceeded with their

planned day trip in Bucharest, Romania.

Environmental Factors Behind the Grounding

The Viking Ullur’s grounding is linked to unprecedented low water levels on the Danube, which have fallen to the lowest point in three decades. Reduced rainfall paired with extended summer droughts and heatwaves have caused significant drops in river depth, complicating navigation for river cruises. These conditions are not isolated, as other operators, including Avalon Waterways, have canceled certain Danube and Rhine sailings due to similar challenges.

Viking Cruises emphasized passenger and crew safety as their highest priority throughout the incident. The company stated the vessel remained safe and no injuries occurred during the

grounding. “The safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew is always our highest priority,” Viking Cruises said. The line also committed to providing ongoing updates directly to affected guests and their travel advisors. The incident highlights ongoing operational difficulties faced by European river cruises amid shifting environmental conditions.
