WestJet canceled more than 300 flights on August 2, 2026, as a strike by approximately 4,400 flight attendants represented by CUPE Local 8125 began at 12:01 Mountain Time. The strike halted most of WestJet’s flights, impacting roughly 250,000 passengers nationwide. The Calgary-based airline had started scaling back operations on August 1, with 198 flights canceled by late afternoon that day.

Passenger Experiences at Toronto Pearson Airport

Toronto Pearson Airport Terminal 3 experienced severe disruption with long passenger lines and overwhelmed WestJet staff. Some travelers, including Jenni and Jerry Kezema, found themselves stranded without accommodations after their connecting flight from Regina to Dublin was canceled. Jenni Kezema

said, “It’s our 35th anniversary and our kids are waiting for us.” The couple reported receiving 10 to 12 hours’ notice before cancellation and were unable to secure hotel rooms. WestJet managers confirmed no alternative flights or lodging were available at Pearson.

Other passengers like Ryan Dos Santos and the couple Kaitlyn Brisebois and Cody Foreman, affected by cancellations on routes such as Halifax to Edinburgh, reported long wait times and challenges obtaining refunds or rebooking through third parties. Dos Santos urged, “Do better,” regarding the handling of the disruptions.

Union Negotiations and Official Statements

The flight attendants’ strike commenced following unsuccessful negotiations between WestJet

and CUPE Local 8125. The union stated that bargaining was ongoing to prevent the strike, but no tentative agreement had been reached by the strike start. A WestJet spokesperson said their latest proposal was intended to be transformational and addressed key union priorities.

Travel Disruption Details and Operational Impacts

The strike resulted in most WestJet flights being grounded on August 2, including affected routes such as a canceled Regina to Dublin flight and a canceled Halifax to Edinburgh leg despite the Toronto to Halifax leg proceeding as scheduled. The cancellations forced approximately 250,000 passengers to alter their plans. WestJet struggled to provide accommodations, leading to stranded

travelers at airports and empty resort rooms awaiting absent customers.

Voices from the Stranded Passengers

Jenni Kezema described feeling “more stranded” than ever and cited the emotional toll of lost time with family, saying, “We don’t have a suitcase; we don’t have a hotel… I have kids waiting in Ireland for me right now.” Jerry Kezema emphasized the personal cost, asking, “What financial price can you put on that? It’s time that we’re losing with our family.” The Kezemas and others faced long wait times, exhaustion, and uncertainty about when they might resume their travel.
