An internal technology failure at American Airlines on July 29, 2026, prompted the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center to issue a nationwide ground stop on all American Airlines departures around 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. This pause in departures lasted less than an hour before the FAA lifted the restriction and American Airlines resumed flights.

Flight Delays and Cancellations Impact Nationwide Schedule

The IT outage caused delays for approximately 1,100 American Airlines flights, representing about 30% of the airline’s daily schedule. In addition, more than 200 flights were canceled. These disruptions compounded earlier delays caused by severe thunderstorms affecting airports along the U.S. East Coast.

Disrupted Connectivity of Core Operating Systems

The

problem originated from an internal technology failure that impacted connectivity between critical American Airlines operating systems. This disruption affected interconnected platforms including reservation, crew-scheduling, dispatch, and regulatory data feeds. Federal aviation regulations require full functionality of these systems before flights can legally depart, grounding aircraft despite readiness.

Operational Impact and Official Responses

Passengers were stranded nationwide during the ground stop as American Airlines and its regional affiliates were prohibited from initiating departure anywhere in the United States. Flights already in the air during the outage were unaffected. American Airlines communicated updates via social media while IT personnel worked to restore service. The airline confirmed that

system functionality returned to normal before the FAA lifted the ground stop.
