American Airlines and its regional carriers stopped departures on July 28, 2026, after a significant IT outage affected connectivity across multiple systems. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a nationwide ground stop for all American flights not already airborne. The outage caused widespread delays before connectivity was fully restored, allowing the airline to resume normal operations.

FlightAware reported the IT failure led to delays on approximately 1,100 American Airlines flights, representing 30% of its scheduled departures that day. In addition, Reuters confirmed that 221 flights, or 6% of the carrier’s total schedule for July 28, were canceled due to the

disturbance.

The outage impacted several of American Airlines’ principal hub airports including Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, Nashville International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

An American Airlines spokesperson said, “A technology issue briefly impacted connectivity for some of our systems on Tuesday evening. Connectivity has been fully restored. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.” The carrier credited its teams for quickly restoring systems and supporting affected

passengers. Eric Napoli, chief legal officer at AirHelp, explained that IT problems are common in the airline industry due to the complex technology ecosystem managing flight schedules, crew coordination, passenger communications, and bookings.

Napoli added, “Some IT issues are tied to the systems that help airlines run their operations—like check-in or scheduling—and don’t touch the physical safety of the aircraft. Others can be more serious depending on what they connect to.” Aviation electronics are critical to day-to-day functions such as communication, navigation, and flight control, with Skyquest estimating avionics and software comprise roughly 30% of an aircraft’s total value.

This event marks the third time in two years that American Airlines’ IT malfunctions have provoked an FAA ground stop.
