FAA Ends Nationwide Ground Stop for American Airlines Following IT Issue

American Airlines Ground Stop Lifted After IT Outage Disrupts 1,100 Flights

American Airlines faced a nationwide ground stop on the evening of July 28, 2026, following an information-technology connectivity issue affecting some of its systems, disrupting departures across its U.S. network.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center implemented the ground stop shortly after 7 p.m. EDT, temporarily halting American flights nationwide from departing. The FAA lifted the nationwide stop by 8:10 p.m. EDT the same day.

Flight Resumptions and Localized Restrictions

Flight tracking confirmed American flights restarting departures after the nationwide ground stop ended. Notable resumed flights included AA100 departing from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to London Heathrow

Airport (LHR) at 7:24 p.m. EDT and AA1069 leaving Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) bound for Miami International Airport (MIA) at 7:47 p.m. EDT.

Despite the nationwide halt lifting, two American-specific ground stops remained active: one covering mainline and subsidiary departures at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), and another affecting only mainline flights at Miami International Airport (MIA). These localized restrictions were classified as “Other / Carrier Request” by the FAA.

Official Statements and Ground Stop Procedures

American Airlines issued a statement acknowledging the technology problem, saying, “A technology issue briefly impacted connectivity for some of our systems on Tuesday evening. Systems are coming back online now

and flights are departing again. We put a temporary ground stop in place while our teams worked to resolve the issue. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

The FAA clarified that ground stops are traffic-management measures that hold departures at their origin airports and do not affect aircraft already in flight. The Air Traffic Control System Command Center coordinates these stops with FAA facilities and partners to manage capacity and safety during system disruptions.

Passenger Impact and Travel Conditions

Flights that had not taken off by the time of the ground stop were held at their departure airports, leading to delays and disrupted

connections across American Airlines’ network. The recovery was gradual as held aircraft proceeded through departure queues and arriving flights required gate availability.

Passengers traveling through Charlotte and Miami airports faced extended localized ground stops even after the nationwide measure was lifted. Travelers at affected airports, including major hubs like JFK and Pittsburgh, experienced resumed departures but may have encountered ongoing delays into the evening.

Concurrent Adverse Weather and Incident Context

The IT-related ground stops occurred concurrently with weather-induced air traffic restrictions across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Airports such as Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), Baltimore/Washington International Airport

(BWI), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) operated under thunderstorm-related ground stops or delay programs, compounding delays in the region.

American Airlines experienced a similar brief nationwide IT disruption on December 24, 2024; however, no connection between the two events has been established. Details on the exact systems affected, causes of the July 28 outage, or involvement of vendors or cybersecurity events were not disclosed by American Airlines at the time of reporting.
