The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop advisory for LaGuardia Airport on Monday, July 28, amid staffing shortages affecting the New York area. Simultaneously, JFK airport experienced arrival delays averaging 2 hours and 29 minutes as the FAA implemented a Traffic Management Program for inbound flights.
Delta Air Lines and Earlier Disruptions
Delta Air Lines accounted for the majority of flight cancellations out of LaGuardia Airport on Monday. Earlier this month, over 500 flights were canceled and around 4,000 delayed across the New York airspace, including JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport due to combined weather and air traffic control
staffing issues.
Ground Stops Lifted at Newark, JFK, LaGuardia
The FAA lifted ground stops at Newark Liberty International Airport, John F Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport after addressing staffing constraints. A ground stop means all flights scheduled to depart for the affected airport are held at their origin airports until the directive ends. The FAA also slowed flight arrivals at Philadelphia International Airport in response to ongoing air traffic control shortages.
According to an official FAA statement, “Due to STAFFING / STAFFING, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing
some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes.”
