The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced ground stop advisories and flight delays affecting John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport on Monday, July 27, 2026. These disruptions are attributed to air traffic control staffing shortages and weather conditions impacting multiple airports in the New York area.
Flights arriving at JFK faced an average delay of 2 hours and 29 minutes due to a Traffic Management Program implemented by the FAA. Delta Air Lines recorded the highest number of flight cancellations out of LaGuardia Airport during the same day.
A ground
stop means flights destined for the affected airport are held at their points of origin until the FAA lifts the stop. On Monday, ground stops were imposed at Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK but were later lifted. The FAA manages air traffic across these four airports, applying these measures to manage capacity amid staffing and weather challenges.
Earlier in July 2026, more than 500 flights were canceled and approximately 4,000 delayed in the New York metropolitan area due to similar weather-related and air traffic control staffing constraints, adding context to the current operational challenges.
“Due to STAFFING / STAFFING, there is
a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes,” the FAA stated.
