On the morning of 26 July 2026, Gatwick Airport, Britain’s second busiest airport and a major hub for budget airlines including EasyJet, experienced a water supply disruption affecting both terminals. Passengers were unable to flush toilets, wash hands, access hot drinks, or refill water bottles, and airport restaurants closed due to the lack of running water.
Power Outage at Water Treatment Facility Triggers Disruption
The disruption was caused by a power outage at a water treatment facility near Horley, reported between 15:39 and 18:29 GMT on 26 July 2026. SES Water, the regional supplier responsible for the affected infrastructure, confirmed low water pressure or temporary loss of supply
in parts of Horley including Gatwick Airport.
Flight Operations Unaffected as Airport Implements Emergency Measures
Flight operations at Gatwick Airport were not affected by the water supply issue. Bottled water was distributed to passengers and staff, and contingency measures were implemented to ensure passenger welfare during the disruption.
Official Statements Confirm Ongoing Investigation and Response
Gatwick Airport stated the water issue affected both terminals and was under investigation: “A water issue in the Horley area is causing disruption at the airport this morning. The problem is affecting water supply in both terminals and is currently under investigation.” The airport confirmed bottled water distribution and contingency plans for passenger welfare. SES Water acknowledged complications caused by
the power outage and said it was working closely with Gatwick Airport to restore service quickly.
