WestJet has implemented a fee-free flight change and cancellation policy for passengers with bookings from July 30 to August 4, 2026. This action follows the announcement that 4,400 flight attendants represented by CUPE Local 8125 could legally strike starting August 2 if negotiations fail to produce a new agreement.

Union data indicates 99.4% of WestJet’s flight attendants support strike action. The dispute centers on unresolved issues including wages, unpaid working hours, and working conditions. If the strike occurs, it could affect up to 75,000 passengers daily across WestJet’s network in Canada during one of the busiest travel periods.

Ongoing Negotiations and Safety Status

WestJet and

CUPE Local 8125 remain engaged in bargaining talks, with both sides publicly expressing a preference for a negotiated resolution to avoid service disruptions. To date, no accidents, injuries, casualties, or security incidents have been connected to the potential strike.

Industry Context and Traveler Options

The labor dispute highlights wider challenges in the aviation industry related to balancing cost efficiency and fair employee compensation. WestJet’s temporary policy allowing passengers to modify or cancel flights without penalty is intended to provide flexibility in case of disruption. Passengers with flights scheduled between July 30 and August 4 can make one fee-free adjustment.
