WestJet Group Ltd. faces a possible strike by its mainline flight attendants after employees voted last week to authorize strike action that could begin as early as August 2, 2026, coinciding with Canada’s Civic holiday long weekend.
Negotiations continue between WestJet and CUPE 8125, the union representing 4,400 of the airline’s flight attendants, whose collective agreement expired at the end of 2025. WestJet remains optimistic about reaching a new agreement that acknowledges cabin crew contributions.
Flexible Booking Policies Amid Strike Threat
To mitigate disruption, WestJet is allowing passengers with bookings from July 30 through August 4, 2026, to make a one-time change or cancel their flights
without any fee. This policy applies exclusively to WestJet’s mainline flights. WestJet Encore flights operating on the Q400 aircraft and codeshare partner flights are not affected by the potential strike.
Travelers who booked through WestJet Vacations, Sunwing Vacations, or Vacances WestJet Québec will be contacted directly by their vacation providers regarding flexible booking options.

CUPE local 8125 president Alia Hussain urged WestJet to return to bargaining, emphasizing the need to prevent interruptions to passenger travel. The flight attendants have been working without a collective agreement since the end of 2025, heightening tensions in ongoing talks.

WestJet operates approximately 560 mainline
flights daily, all of which could be significantly disrupted if the strike proceeds. WestJet stated, “Our team remains actively engaged in negotiations and is fully prepared to make meaningful improvements that work for cabin crew while balancing the future sustainability of WestJet.” The airline conveyed its optimism that an agreement recognizing the important contributions of its cabin crew will be reached before a strike occurs.
