WestJet’s 4,400 mainline flight attendants represented by CUPE Local 8125 have secured legal authorization to strike starting August 2, 2026, as negotiations over pay and working conditions remain unresolved. A strike vote drew 99.4% approval among the union members, positioning the crew to disrupt operations across Canada during the Civic Holiday weekend.
In response, WestJet Group Ltd. is permitting passengers with bookings on mainline flights scheduled from July 30 through August 4 to make one-time flight rescheduling or cancellations without incurring fees. This policy excludes WestJet Encore flights operated by Q400 aircraft and codeshare flights run by partner airlines.
The
potential strike could impact roughly 560 daily WestJet mainline flights and disrupt travel for approximately 75,000 passengers each day. WestJet Encore and codeshare services will continue unaffected, limiting the disruption to core operations handled directly by WestJet’s mainline cabin crew.
Statements from WestJet and Union Leadership
WestJet stated its negotiation team remains actively engaged and prepared to offer meaningful improvements that balance cabin crew interests with the airline’s future sustainability. A spokesperson said the airline is optimistic about reaching an agreement that recognizes the important contributions of its flight attendants.
Alia Hussain, president of CUPE Local 8125, urged WestJet to return to bargaining with a focus
on preventing travel disruptions. ‘‘WestJet should do the right thing and prevent travel disruptions for their passengers,’’ Hussain said, emphasizing the union’s desire to avoid a strike if a fair deal can be reached.
Labor Dispute Background and Implications
The labor dispute centers on pay, unpaid labor hours, and working conditions, with the current collective agreement for WestJet mainline flight attendants having expired at the end of 2025. The impasse highlights ongoing challenges in the aviation industry balancing operating costs with workforce compensation demands.
Passengers booked through WestJet Vacations, Sunwing Vacations, or Vacances WestJet Québec will be contacted directly with flexible travel options by their
providers. The free change policy applies solely to WestJet mainline ticket holders booked to fly within the specified date range.
Contingency planning by WestJet aims to mitigate immediate disruptions beginning August 2, coinciding with one of the busiest travel periods in Canada. Negotiations continue but the potential for operational impact remains high if an agreement is not reached before the strike deadline.
