Severe thunderstorms on July 23, 2026, caused widespread disruption to air travel across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. More than 2,000 flights were canceled and over 5,000 delayed, with a total of at least 7,000 flights affected according to FlightAware data.
FAA Ground Stops at Major Eastern Airports
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops at multiple airports due to hazardous weather conditions. Affected airports included Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) in Maryland, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in Massachusetts, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Teterboro Airport (TEB) in New Jersey, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Westchester County Airport (HPN) in New York,
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) in Pennsylvania, and both Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia. Canada’s Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) also experienced a ground stop during the weather event.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) did not have a formal ground stop but experienced average ground delays of approximately four hours due to the storms. In the New York City metropolitan area alone, nearly 600 departing flights were canceled and more than 500 delayed.
Airline Responses to Flight Disruptions
United Airlines waived trip change fees for eligible customers whose flights were affected by the weather. Passengers could
rebook flights departing between July 20 and July 23, 2026, on United flights between the same cities and cabin class without paying fare differences.
JetBlue provided affected customers the option to rebook travel through Sunday or receive a refund to the original form of payment. The airline cited multiple rounds of severe weather impacting travel across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
American Airlines notified impacted travelers via email and mobile application, requiring rebooking by Wednesday with new travel scheduled by Friday. The airline also offered rebooking options for customers with cancellations caused by the weather.
Passenger Impact and Regional Weather Conditions
Thousands of passengers faced cancellations and
delays throughout the affected region. Nearly 600 flights departing from the New York City metro area were canceled, with more than 500 delayed. Flood warnings and tornado watches were issued across parts of the Northeast during the storm event. At least two tornadoes were confirmed, one in northeast Pennsylvania and another in northern New Jersey.
Cause and Operational Disruptions
Severe thunderstorms passing over the eastern United States led the FAA to impose ground stops to temporarily restrict aircraft movement for safety. The storms caused operational challenges across some of the busiest airports in the country, resulting in widespread cancellations and delays.
