Pennsylvania, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia. Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) in Canada was also placed under a ground stop.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York did not have a ground stop but experienced average ground delays of approximately four hours. In the New York City metropolitan area, nearly 600 departing flights were canceled and more than 500 delayed.
Airlines respond with flexible travel options
JetBlue announced assistance efforts for customers affected by the storm, offering rebooking through July 26, 2026, and refunds to original payment methods. United Airlines waived trip change fees for
eligible travelers rescheduling flights that depart between July 20 and July 23, 2026, with no fare difference charges for flights within the same cabin and cities.
American Airlines communicated with impacted customers via email and its mobile application, requiring rebookings by July 22, 2026, with travel completion by July 24, 2026.
FAA restrictions and airport delays cause operational challenges
The FAA ground stops temporarily suspended aircraft movements at the listed airports to manage air traffic safely amid heavy rain, flood warnings, and tornado watches across the region. The thunderstorms included two confirmed tornado sightings, one in northeast Pennsylvania and another in northern New Jersey.
FlightAware reported that the
number of flight disruptions could increase as the storm system continues moving through the area. JFK’s average ground delay of about four hours reflects the widespread operational impact of the weather on flight schedules.

The severe storms resulted in thousands of cancellations and delays, forcing passengers across the eastern United States to adjust travel plans. Airlines responded by offering flexible rebooking and refund options to mitigate passenger inconvenience.
